Owaya is the pseudonym Erick Obaya uses for his musical work. Although it clearly derives from his surname, it carries a symbolism of its own: replacing the b with a w pays tribute to his mother, whose name begins with that letter. In Yukpa—the language of an Indigenous people from the Sierra de Perijá—Owaya means “world.” From this perspective, the name can be understood as an invitation to enter another world.
